Finding a home
All you need to know about
buying a home
Getting into the market can seem complicated. It’s helpful to think about what’s essential, and what you can afford. That way, you can refine your search to homes that meet your needs.
Some things to consider could include:
- number of bedrooms
- size of backyard
- available parking
- location of suburb
- access to shops, schools and public transport.
Where to look
Online
Websites like realestate.com.au and domain.com.au advertise a big range of properties. Search by location, price and house type to get an idea of what’s available. You can also register for email alerts to let you know when a new property is listed.
Property locator lists affordable homes for sale in South Australia. Many are available through Housing SA’s Affordable Homes Program.
Newspapers
The Advertiser has real estate sections on Wednesday and Saturday. Messenger newspapers also have real estate sections.
Real estate agents
Visit real estate agents in person. They will give you an idea of the homes they have for sale which could be right for you.
What to look for
Found a home that seems right? Time to get a closer look. Visit for an open inspection, which are generally listed in the advertisement for the property. You can also contact the real estate agent to arrange a time.
There are lots of helpful checklists to use when you’re looking through the home. Try searching for ‘property inspection checklists’ through Google.
